A Passionate Pursuit

My eleventh novel is coming out in just a few short days and it has caused me to reflect on my journey as a writer.  Though I have written since the age of thirteen, my first novel was released in 2010 and every year since I have had releases; with the exception of last year.  2014 slipped away and before I knew it, an entire year had passed. Perhaps every writer needs a breather now and again.
During the course of those twelve months, people asked if I was quitting.  My only answer came in the form of a smile.  See, what non-writers don't know is that writers can't quit.  They might cease to publish their work, but they never stop writing.

Writing is a disease, a curse, an addiction, an obsession and a love all rolled into one.  Some days you battle it.  Some days you relish in it.  There are moments when you birth the words through force and there are moments when they flow.  But, the one consistency is that a writer writes.

With three more novels currently in the works, I hope to have several releases in 2015; however, even if it is only one, as long as my pen hits the paper or my fingertips brush the keys on a daily basis, I will be fulfilled.

In reflection, what I have learned is that it is important to find what you love and do it.  No matter how others perceive it.  No matter what odds are against you.  No matter how many obstacles are thrown in your path.  One cannot waste their life on passion.  Life is wasted only on the mundane and the meaningless; never on passionate endeavors.  For the pursuit of passion is never a failure.

If it fulfills you... if it is your dream...then chase after it and never, ever quit.   ~

Crabby Cancer Tour

It’s almost June, which happens to be my birthday month.  Yes, I’m a cancer which explains why I suffer from the occasional bouts of crabbiness.  We crabs can be quite crusty on the outside but have a warm, succulent interior goodness.  J

As I kick off my summer book club tour, I’m offering a special promotion to any and all book club members that host me and my novels.  Summer spots are filling up fast, so hurry and schedule your book club for the Crabby Cancer Tour by emailing me at:

In the subject line type:  Crabby Cancer Tour

In the email please tell me:

1.      How many people are in your book club?

2.      Where you are located.  (i.e. City/State)

3.      Available dates

4.      Which books you are interested in reading

5.      What sets your book club apart from every other book club?  (i.e., Previous answers I’ve received have been:  “We love wine!”   “We are Radical Women!”)

Upon receiving your email, I will send you the details of the Crabby CancerTour promotion.

Book signings can be stuffy and boring, which is why I have opted to tour with as many book clubs as my schedule will allow.  After all, there is nothing more rewarding than meeting new faces that quickly become new friends.  ~

Blogging Blues

Blogging can be demanding.  Though I see the benefits of it, it can become overwhelming because my writing time is limited and I would much rather be working on my next novel than carrying on about nothing.  It’s not that I feel that bloggers, such as myself, ramble pointlessly; quite the contrary.  I enjoy visiting a handful of blogs that prove to be informational and entertaining.

However, when it comes to consistent blogging, I often find myself behind the eight-ball, so to speak; and it makes me crabby.

My life in general is not that different than those in my demographic.  I do all of the normal things that most forty-two year old, married women do.  I pluck my eyebrows, wax my upper lip, color the gray in my hair, and consistently rub my face with revitalizing, uplifting, plumping, wrinkle-reducing, age-defying creams.  I take care of my children and the dog, satisfy my husband, clean my house, do the laundry, keep everyone’s schedule organized and spend a greater part of my week driving to practices, games and rehearsals.  Around all of that…I write.

There are days when I have a cohesive block of time to let my creative juices rage, and those are my most fun writing moments.  Four hours of uninterrupted creativity is very fulfilling.  Unfortunately, those days are not the norm for me.  Most of the time I am squeezing in thirty minutes here or an hour there, hoping that my brain can easily pick up where I left off and continue the story.  It’s a challenge.  I find myself hurrying to my computer and uttering a silent prayer, "God, please let the words flow quickly, because I don't have much time."

Between phone calls and emails, the time to write dwindles…and then I realize, crap, I’ve got to post a blog.  Ugh.  There goes any hope of getting another chapter done today.
And then I sing the B-L-O-G-ging Blues.

I don’t know if most writers feel this way?  It would be fun to conduct a comparative study and see if the majority of writers love or loathe blogging; but that study will have to wait until I get my next novel completed.  J

Entertaining Enquiries

I love my readers and particularly enjoy it when they contact me out of the blue to comment about or question something I have said or written.  I laugh out loud reading some of the emails…so let me just say, thank you.  Thank you for reading my books and for taking the time to write to me and share your thoughts.  Keep 'em coming!

One of my favorite things to do as an author is to meet with book clubs.  Most of the clubs with which I have had the privilege of meeting have been predominantly composed of women, and we have spent the evening in a casual environment, drinking wine and gossiping about our favorite characters.  I love these meetings because it not only gives me a chance to meet some phenomenal women, but I get to hear their perspectives on the characters, scenes and circumstances I have created.  What’s more, they keep me quite entertained with their questions; some of which I would like to share.

Here are the three most common questions I am asked with regards to my novels:

·         In No Easy Way, you wrote about a broken marriage, wherein both the hero and the heroine were engaged in inappropriate behavior with other people.  Do you believe a marriage can survive what Tom and Kate’s marriage endured in the book?

Yes.  Marriage is a lot of work and no relationship is or ever will be perfect.  People make mistakes…painful, awful, life-altering mistakes…but those errors don’t necessarily have to destroy the marriage.  Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t.  It’s a choice only the two persons involved can make.  The whole point of No Easy Way was to show that real couples can experience real heartache and come out stronger in the end…but there’s “no easy way” through it.

·         If you were Angel Maratinzano from the Just Call Me Angel series, would you pick Tony or Andrew?

This is one of the most popular questions I am asked and it also happens to be one of the first questions I ask my readers, as well.  Who would YOU pick?  Andrew is logical, stable and romantic.  Tony is passionate, fiery and strong-willed.  Both are tall, dark and handsome with a muscular physique and an appealing sense of humor.  Both are excellent lovers, cherish Angel deeply and would die to protect her.  Tony calls her “babe” and Andrew calls her “sweetheart.”  Surely if we could mesh the two together it would create the perfect man; but we can’t.

If I can’t choose between them, how can I expect Angel to pick one?

·        Do you find Angel’s promiscuity (i.e. sleeping with Grayson, Tony and Andrew) to be inappropriate?

I LOVE this question!  Here’s why…  Angel hasn’t slept with Tony in the series…yet.  She and Tony met in college, fell in love and were engaged to be married; then his family found out who she was and forced him to leave her.  In Tetterbaum’s Truth, Angel reminisces about making-love with Tony, but they have never again indulged in sexual activity beyond a passionate kiss now and again.  Furthermore, she has only made-love with Andrew one time during the course of four novels.  I would hardly call this promiscuity.  Grayson Galante was her only promiscuous fling and that was birthed out of her broken heart after Tony left.  Well, that, and the fact that she was driven by pure lust for his body.  For an un-wed, unattached, attractive, young woman, I’d say she hasn’t been very promiscuous at all.  J

A Novel & A Bottle

I have recently learned that George Clooney has released his own line of high-end Tequila, called Casamigos. It is a small batch of ultra-premium tequila that has been tasted and approved by not only a master distiller, but by George himself.   The batches are numbered and signed.
I love the name...a simple combination of Casa (home) and Amigos (friends).  The name alone makes me want to invite some friends to my home and drink up.

Another idea...why not sit down with a good book and a bottle of Casamigos?  Lose yourself in the suspenseful twists of a Claridge novel and the passionate throes of a Clooney bottle.
What can I say… he’s a man after my own heart.  Cheers, George!

The "Olga Complex"

Spammers piss me off.  That statement applies to online, email and telephone spammers.  People who intentionally comment on blog posts only for the purpose of marketing their products should be smacked.  I understand the importance of marketing but do they honestly believe this is an effective way to increase sales?  Are they really that stupid?  This type of spamming is up there in my book with all of the penile dysfunction spam emails I receive.  I mean, really?  I don’t even have a penis so why are they sending me advertisements for ED drugs?  Have they ever considered targeting their spam emails to an appropriate demographic?  Perhaps that would prove more prosperous…duh?!

Another form of spamming that I find utterly distasteful are the telemarketers that call me at home to solicit their products.  If I want a vacuum I’ll go purchase one at the store.  If I’m interested in a timeshare, I’ll contact a realtor on my own, thank you very much.  Please, don’t try to sell me something when I’m in the middle of homework or dinner.  I consider it rude.  It creates in me what I call the “Olga Complex.”
This is a reference that has grown out of the Just Call Me Angel series and is based on the character of Angel’s Great Aunt, Olga.  When Olga gets angry or annoyed, she feels an ever-growing and powerful desire to Taser the object of her irritation.  With regards to spammers, I can totally relate.  One little zap through the telephone lines would most assuredly remove my name from their call list.  I have to admit, it’s an electrifying thought!  J

Say NO to Bad-Ass B.O.

Walking through the grocery store this morning, I was suddenly overcome by an odor that was so strong it was palatable.  This stinky stench filled the store in a matter of moments.  The best way I can describe it is to say it smelled like a layer of body odor, covered with curry, layered in dry urine, swirled with something musky and sweet and then topped with more body odor.  It was the most bad-ass B.O. I’ve ever smelled!

People in the store grimaced and I, wearing a cotton wide-necked sweater, buried my nose in the neck of my shirt.  My eyes watered from the potency of the stench and, though I haven’t checked, I am certain my nose hairs were burned clean off.

My first inclination was to think a homeless person may have wandered into the store for warmth or to use the restroom; and compassion tugged at me.  But then, I caught a glimpse of the odorous wonder and compassion left me.

It was a young woman, maybe in her early twenties.  I let my eyes run the course of her body from her feet to her head.  She was dressed in clothing that looked clean and pressed.  Her hands were manicured and her nails painted.  There was no dirt on her skin and she wore shiny lip gloss and gold earrings.  There was nothing that indicated that she might be homeless.  In fact, she appeared well groomed, as if she had showered this morning; though the stench spoke otherwise.  My eyes stopped on her hair, which hung in thick dreadlocks; thick, dried, clumpy dreadlocks. These weren't the nice looking, fashionable kind of dreadlocks.  These were muddy and mangy looking.   I shivered internally, imagining the amount of bacteria in each pasty lock and wondering when was the last time her whole head had been given a good, solid scrubbing.

As I passed by her, the odor triggered my gag reflex.  How could someone with such a pretty, clean face smell so horrible?  Upon returning from the store I could still smell it.  I was having a Seinfeld moment…the B.O. was like an entity that had latched onto me.  I threw my clothes into the washer and jumped into a hot shower.

I’m now free of the stench but still curious as to how someone can smell that bad and not know it?  An even bigger question is why aren't her friends telling her that she stinks?!    Maybe we need a sign that says, "Just Say NO to Bad-Ass B.O."  So, when someone smells that bad you don't have to say anything, you just hand them the sign.  ~

A "Give Me Everything" Valentine

It’s Valentine’s week, and I am giving a shout out to some of my favorite VHP authors whom I feel privileged to have met and grown to love. They don’t know I’m doing this…it’s my secret surprise Valentine to each of them. So far, you’ve met Smoky Trudeau Zeidel, Charmaine Gordon, Melinda Clayton, Chelle Cordero, Malcolm Campbell and Marilyn Celeste Morris, L.E.Harvey, Robert Hays, Collin Kelley,  Janet Lane Walters, and  Anne K. Albert.

It has been an exciting week for me, as I’ve had a blast getting to know my fellow VHP authors a little bit more.  Without further delay, I’d like to introduce Angela Kay Austin.

Bestselling author Angela Kay Austin has expressed herself through words for as long as she can remember. Poems became songs performed with her cousin at every family gathering. But, eventually, short stories filled her favorite pink diary. An infatuation with music and theater led to years playing various instruments and small extra roles in TV shows before giving way to a degree and career in radio and TV production. After completing another degree in marketing, Angela found herself combining her love for all things creative and worked for many years in promotions and advertising.

But once again, she found herself writing, which led to her first published work which stayed on her publisher's bestseller list for ten weeks. Her second release hit the bestseller list at All Romance eBooks.

Angela has authored several novels, including Give Me Everything and her upcoming release, Derailed.  Her stories sizzle and are sure to warm your heart.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to read one of Angela’s books, order or download one today.

Angela has spoken on author panels, and served on boards for various author groups. When she's not writing, you can find her reading her favorite authors, or researching her next story idea. Angela shares her downtime with her mixed-bred rescue terrier--Midnight, in the beautiful southern state of Tennessee.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Angela!  J

Anne's Humor and Heart

It’s Valentine’s week, and I am giving a shout out to some of my favorite VHP authors whom I feel privileged to have met and grown to love.  They don’t know I’m doing this…it’s my secret surprise Valentine to each of them.  So far, you’ve met Smoky Trudeau Zeidel, Charmaine Gordon, Melinda Clayton, Chelle Cordero,  Malcolm Campbell and Marilyn Celeste Morris, L.E.Harvey, Robert Hays, Collin Kelley and Janet Lane Walters.
It’s been an exciting week!  The next author I’d like to introduce is Anne K. Albert.

Anne K. Albert has taught high school art, sold display advertising for a weekly newspaper, and worked for a national brand water company, but now writes full time. A member of the Romance Writers of America, she’s grateful for the constructive criticism, encouragement, and many friendships she’s garnered along the road to publication.

Anne’s award winning stories (Defending Glory and Frank, Incense & Muriel) chill the spine, warm the heart and soothe the soul...all with a delightful touch of humor.

I haven’t had the opportunity to read Defending Glory yet, but it is on my to-do list.  I have read Frank, Incense & Muriel and have recommended it to several friends and family members.   I can’t tell you the story without giving it away, so I won’t try…but suffice to say there are many twists and turns and the plot is never boring.  In fact, I laughed out loud in several scenes.  I was sad when I read the last page because I didn’t want the book to end.  If you haven’t read it, order it today… I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Anne says, "I find dead bodies and hang out with zany people who lead exciting, exceptional lives. Well, actually, I just made that up. I spend most of my life chained to my computer where I write mystery and romantic suspense stories. All. By. Myself."  She’s a character and that’s probably why she’s able to bring such vibrancy to the characters in her books.

When not writing Anne loves to travel with her high school sweetheart husband, visit with friends and family, walk on the beach, knit, crochet and of course, read using 'Threegio' her cherished and much beloved Kindle 3G.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Anne!  J

A Eclectic Valentine

It’s Valentine’s week, I am giving a shout out to some of my favorite VHP authors whom I feel privileged to have met and grown to love.  They don’t know I’m doing this…it’s my secret surprise Valentine to each of them.  You’ve met Smoky Trudeau Zeidel, Charmaine Gordon, Melinda Clayton, Chelle Cordero,  Malcolm Campbell , Marilyn Celeste Morris, LEHarvey, Robert Hays, and Collin Kelley.   The next author I’d like to introduce is Janet Lane Walters.

Janet Lane Walters lives in the scenic Hudson River Valley with her husband of many years. She is the mother of four and grandmother of five; and quite the prolific writer.  At present, she is the author of 39 novels and novelettes as well as a dozen short stories and as many poems.  For several years she worked as a ghost-writer and has three non-fiction books written for doctors.  As well as being an author, she is a Registered Nurse and upon retiring from nursing in 1993, she began writing full time. Her husband, a psychiatrist, says writing is her obsession and he has no desire to cure her. Besides writing, she enjoys exploring Astrology and uses this while casting her characters. She is a lover of classical music, with Tchaikovsky leading her hit parade.

Janet is not only a novelist, but a cross-genre eclectic novelist, being published in the areas of mystery, suspense, romance, sweet to spicy, fantasy from young adult to mature and non-fiction.

The Warrior of Bast, Mistress of the Moons, Healwoman  Dark Moon, and The Chosen of Horu are four of Janet’s many books, published by Vanilla Heart.

I haven’t had a chance to read as many of Janet’s books as I would like, but I do want to recommend Healwoman, Dark Moon.  It’s a story of Norna, an abandoned girl and Shandor, a young man training to be a priest and the battles they face on their journey of love.  It is a love story and an action adventure all rolled into one.

If you haven’t read any of Janet’s 39 books, order or download one today.

To learn more about Janet, please visit her blog at:  http://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com/

Happy Valentine’s Day, Janet!  J

Charming Charmaine

Since it is Valentine’s week, I am giving a shout out to some of my favorite fellow VHP authors whom I feel privileged to have met and grown to love.  They don’t know I’m doing this…it’s my secret surprise Valentine to each of them.  We met Smoky yesterday and today I want to introduce an incredible lady, author and friend, Charmaine Gordon.

Here are some of Charmaine’s books:
To Be Continued
Starting Over
Now What?
Reconstructing Charlie
Sin of Omission
The Catch  (Release date TBD)

I thoroughly enjoy Charmaine’s novels and one of my favorites is Reconstructing Charlie.  If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it.

Charmaine has years of experience as an actor on daytime drama. Stage, spokesperson and commercials plus writing sketches for Air Force shows helped prepare her for the wonders of a writing career. Of course, she didn’t realize it at the time when immersed in the written words of others, that she was like a sponge, soaking up how to construct a scene, write dialogue, and paint the setting.

Charmaine says, “My writing effort came later when I wrote a two page story, sent it to son, Paul who commented, ‘Cool. Can you write ten pages?’ Seemed impossible but the story poured from my fingers and seventy thousand words later, I typed The End.”

She kissed her acting career goodbye, leaving on a high note with the lead in an Off Broadway play, “The Fourth Commandment” by author Rich Knipe.  “It was great fun and time to move on,” says Charmaine. Charmaine had a full schedule working on movies like “Working Girl”, “Road to Wellsville” and having the pleasure of Anthony Hopkins’ company at lunch.  She worked with Mike Nichols in “Regarding Henry” and sang outside with Harrison Ford, cried with Gene Wilder over loss on another set, and sang ‘It Had to be You’ with the whole cast of  “When Harry Met Sally”.  Charmaine says she has lots of fond memories, and adds, “Especially my first job as a stand-in leg model for Geraldine Ferraro in a Diet Pepsi commercial with Secret Service men guarding her and her daughters.  It was a sweet time.”

Charmaine’s experience shines through in her writing and gives each of her characters relatable depth.  For more information on Charmaine and her books, visit:  http://www.vanillaheartbooksandauthors.com/Charmaine_Gordon.html
Happy Valentine's Day, Charmaine.  :)

Salivating Over Suspense

I am currently working on the next book in the Just Call Me Angel series; and though my writing time has been limited, I am happy with the storyline thus far.  It starts with a bang and there are already several plot twists that I hope will keep my readers enthralled.

This book has been extra-fun to write because it has given me an opportunity to research chemical weapons, carbon monoxide poisoning and several other medically related terms of which, previous to writing this novel, I was unaware.

I’ve also introduced a few new characters, who had humor and spice to the pages.

Life has been hectic lately, but each time I have the opportunity to sit down and write, I feel thankful and fulfilled.  Filling the pages feels as if it empties me of all the pressures of life and leaves me open and ready to be filled back up with new ideas.  It’s sort of a cleansing renewal.

From wine cellars to morgues, my hope is that this book will keep my readers drinking in mystery and salivating over the suspense.   ~

Mail of Malice

As I’m wading through mounds of emails I thought I would take a moment and share with my readers some of the expressions of malice I have received as a result of my novel, House ofLies.  I don’t have any proof that these were sent to me by International House of Prayer (IHOP) members, however, my gut tells me they were, as previous emails of this nature have been from IHOP members; so I’m going to proceed in that manner.

“You have chosen to befriend homosexuals instead of the Lord and have mocked His people in House of Lies.  You mock our prophetic understanding and may God make an example of you and strike you down with the lightning of justice.”

“You would be better off dead than to cross the Lord’s work.  Read Acts and be warned.”

“If I were you I would watch my back.”

“Mike Bickle is a chosen apostle of the Lord and you are a fool to stand against him. Gods favor rests upon the godly.”

Yes, I am friends with homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals and metrosexuals.  I don’t befriend nor defriend people based on their sexuality.  I don’t judge.  It isn’t my job.  It isn’t my calling. It isn’t the way I want to live my life.  Furthermore, if you want to pull out your Bible I’m quite certain you’ll find several verses in the New Testament that specifically tell you NOT to judge.

As far as the accusation of mocking God’s people in House of Lies, I do not see how this is relevant.  I don’t mock your “prophetic understanding” because there is no understanding to mock.  The prophecies upon which your cult group (IHOP) is built have been proven false.  (* Look up the KC Prophets, The Blueprint Prophesy, The Ernie Gruen Report) Your leader has openly admitted to the fact that the majority of prophesies coming out of IHOP are not accurate and he preaches that inaccurate prophetic words are acceptable.  For me to say this practice of false prophesy is bogus is not me mocking you….it is simply me stating a fact.  It is my personal belief that any prophetic word that comes from the Lord will be 100% accurate.  If there is even the slightest inaccuracy than the so-called prophetic word is not from God.  It's either all right or all wrong.  God doesn't deal in half-truths.

In addition, and not to tread on your arrogance, House of Lies wasn’t written about YOU.  It’s a fictional cult group with a fictional leader.  (The only reason IHOP members believe the book is about them is because an IHOP member's [Bethany Deaton] murder was striking similar to the story.)

Second, I’m not crossing the Lord’s work, nor would I ever.  I know it and He knows it and that's all that matters.

Third, I have read the book of Acts and my backside is being watched...but thank you for your concern.

As for Mike Bickle… he is a self-proclaimed apostle of the Lord.  I don’t stand against him on a personal level.  I stand against ANY cult leader who manipulates Scripture, spews bigotry, spreads lies in the name of God and deceives the youth in an attempt to build an end-times army that has destroyed families, taken lives and has the potential to become ever-more dangerous.  I stand against that, not against one man.

You can continue to email me with your words of warning, but it would better behoove you to  spend your time researching IHOP for yourself, instead of settling for being spoon-fed lies simply because the acceptance of it all "feels" good.  Drugs "feel" good too, but they destroy you from the inside out.

Instead of pointing a finger at me, it sounds like you have some very tough questions to ask yourself...

...and to ask God.  Good luck.  ~
